Stop 7. Large-Biotite Facies of the La Posta Pluton |
|---|
|
Continue east on Old Highway 80 for about 1.3 miles to moderately fresh rocks exposed in a road cut of weathered material.
Although the L-B facies has been mapped in fault slivers within the Elsinore Fault Zone (Lampe, 1988), it is, thus far, a characteristic feature of only the La Posta pluton. As in the H-B facies, this facies is somewhat more mafic on the east side of the pluton. Hornblende is sparse. The salt and pepper appearance is mainly due to 1/2 to 1 cm euhedral crystals of biotite. Small oikocrysts of alkali feldspar are more abundant than in the H-B facies and it is marginally a granodiorite. |
